Case studies and shadow studies were used to explore the impact of physician participation on isolation and loneliness among older people. The research was commissioned by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland in partnership with the Baring Foundation.

2 Arts & Older People Program

In 2009 the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, with the support of The Atlantic Philanthropies, launched an innovative three-year Arts & Older People Program with the aim of promoting social inclusion for older people through the arts. The pilot program proved to be very successful and in 2012 the program was relaunched with funding from the Arts Council in partnership with The Baring Foundation and the Public Health Agency.

3 Six case studies

The six case studies described in this report were chosen as they reflect the geographical spread of the interdisciplinary arts, which includes, among other things, basket weaving, circus skills, creative writing, dance, drama, silk painting, pot- tery, photography, mosaic, wood work and singing.
